Farm Talk Tuesday-Fill up with E15!

Raise your hand if you pull up to the pump and always choose 87 octane, not only because it's sometimes the cheapest option, but also because it's the only option that you KNOW is safe to put in your car.

If you wanna save a bit at the pump and your vehicle is a model year 2001 or newer, look for E15 when you're filling up. E15 is a 15% ethanol blend, as opposed to the 10% ethanol blend in the 87 octane you probably choose most often.

Wondering how this is relevant to what we do here at Gallagher Farms? Ethanol is made from corn! Using higher blends of ethanol like E15 and E85 help grow demand for our corn AND they provide a cleaner burning, environmentally friendly fuel.

Unfortunately, marketing and labeling at the pump can be confusing. Casey's sells E15 but labels it as "Unleaded 88", as do many other retailers. Look for other clues at the pump like the second photo I posted here to get more information.

Here are a couple of important things to remember:

E15: Only for vehicle model years 2001 and newer.

E85: Only for flex-fuel vehicles.

If you're interested, here's an article with more information on the economic and national security benefits of using higher blends of ethanol: https://thehill.com/.../3523332-renewable-fuels-offer.../

If you want to take it a step further, call Representative Rodney Davis and ask him to sign on to the Next Generation Fuels Act!
